In our working heritage series we have so far looked at Steam Powered Pumping Stations and vintage harvesting. These will be followed by further titles covering some more of our engineering and agricultural past, particularly the story of steam engines in agriculture and how the development of tractors and the equipment they pulled or powered advanced the effectiveness of our agriculture. We will also be looking at the development of the canal system, how they were built and operated and also we are going to look at some other more rural crafts such as the whole process of thatching from ‘Field to Roof’. We are also beginning to research the part that wind and water mills played in getting the cereal crops from the field turned into flour and then bread, with the intention of producing a title covering all that was involved in that process.
Starting last year with the 50th anniversary of the Shrewsbury Steam Engine and Vintage Vehicle Rally we have been covering such events as they are a great place to find large numbers of historic and vintage vehicles, skills and activities taking place. We have again covered the Shrewsbury rally and also the Welland steam and vintage rally, we intend to look at more of these vintage gatherings in the future.
